Euonymus japonica ´Green Spire´ (Japanese Spindle)
Description
Grows wide and is easy to prune into shape.
It is also commonly used for hedges.
Consider it as a replacement for Buxus hedges.
Many varieties of Japanese spindle are available, often with white or yellow variegated leaves.
Height
The height of this shrub is 50 cm (without pruning).
Leaf
Dark green, somewhat shiny, evergreen in winter.
Location
Sunny or semi-shady spot.
Application
This Japanese spindle is ideally suited for smaller gardens and plant pots,
excellent to combine with other plants.
Also very suitable as a low hedge.
Location
Tolerates temperatures down to -20°C.
The recommended planting distance for mass planting is 12 to 15 plants per m2.
For hedges, the advice is 6 to 9 plants per linear meter.
This plant is very suitable for a garden with filtered light.
Requires a spot on not too poor soil.
Maintenance
The plant can be easily pruned.
Pruning away excess growth is possible, but shape pruning is also very effective.
Diseases and pests.
The plant is not very susceptible to diseases and pests.
In the presence of, for example, Yew, there is a possibility that the so-called ‘Yew weevil’ (vine weevil) will feed on your Japanese spindle. Feeding damage is recognizable by semicircular bites out of the edges of the leaves.
Tip!
Bantam chickens are generally known to be excellent clearers of Yew weevil larvae.
Fertilization
Standard fertilization for shrubs and perennials is generally perfectly adequate! Follow the instructions on the packaging.
