What is stoneware?

Stoneware is common and slightly stronger than average earthenware. It is made of fine-grained clay and is fired at around 1200° C. So, not only clay is used as with Earthenware, but it is combined with crushed stone. This makes it harder and higher quality than Earthenware.

Nowadays, you can hardly distinguish the difference between earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain with the naked eye. This is because the appearance is largely determined by the glaze.
