Alnus glutinosa in het nederlands gewone of zwarte els genoemd, is een vrij grote bladverliezende boom met een langwerpige, eivormige kroon en glanzende hartvormige middengroene bladeren. Deze zwarte els bloeit in maart en april met roodachtige katjes. Alnus glutinosa houdt van een zonnige standplaats in een vochtige maar luchtige, goed doorlaatbare bodem. Deze boom is goed winterhard, wind en zeewind resistent, verdraagt verharding en luchtvervuiling en kan ook goed als hakhoutwinning gebruikt worden.
